Author Guidelines

Submissions that were considered appropriate for the Journal of Learning Design included:

  • Applied research in the field of learning design in higher education, with a particular focus on the innovative use of technology.
  • Reports of best practice and innovation which are grounded in research and systematic observation.
  • Reports of basic research with direct, well-specified implications for practice.
  • Position papers intended to stimulate critical discussion
  • Papers as part of commissioned Special Issues
Articles submitted to the Journal of Learning Design were not to be under consideration by any other journal or have been published elsewhere. Exceptions were made for the approved reprint of conference papers.

Manuscripts were 4,000-6,000 words in length including references and acknowledgments. Submissions included an abstract of 150-200 words, appropriate keywords, and a copyright statement. No template was used and submissions were presented as a Word (or open-access equivalent) document. Submitted articles were de-identified to facilitate blind peer review.

The Journal of Learning Design accepted submissions in English (UK/Australia) and used the APA 6.0 referencing convention.

Manuscripts that did not adhere to this format were not considered and returned to the authors.

Once an editorial decision had been reached, the nominated author of the manuscript was notified. The initial advice is that the submission was:

  • Accepted as is
  • Accepted with Minor Revision
  • Revised and Resubmitted, or
  • Rejected.
Further advice was given to authors, where required, regarding the modifications needed to their submissions.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors were required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions were been returned to authors that did not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission had not been previously published, nor was it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation had been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The text adhered to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which were found in About the Journal. The academic convention was APA 6.0
  3. The submission was 4000-6000 words in length and was in English adopting British/Australian rather than US spelling.
  4. The article was to be submitted in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or similar document file format.
  5. The text was single-spaced; used a 12-point font; and all illustrations, figures, and tables were placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end. No template was needed. The JLD team completed the layout in the JLD format.
  6. Where available, URLs for the references had been provided, particularly where DOIs were available.
  7. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review had been followed.
  8. JLD aligned itself with the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) best practice guidelines for dealing with ethical issues in journal publishing and adopted the COPE guidelines which the journal members (Advisory Board, editors and the journal manager) had agreed met the purposes and objectives of the Journal.
